Description
The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is the leading source of expertise in the field of transitional justice (TJ)– a set of methods that help societies deal with legacies. ICTJ has worked in more than 50 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and North Africa and the Middle East.
Since it was created in 2001, ICTJ has played a key role in strengthening the TJ field. The breadth of its expertise has given it a reputation for synthesizing knowledge across many different TJ initiatives, allowing it to provide empirically grounded advice on the range of options available to societies in transition.
ICTJ technical advice has been sought after by governments, domestic victims’ and human rights organizations, and international actors working to support post-conflict transformation.
ICTJ’s engagement in Tunisia began in February 2011, three weeks after the fall of the Ben Ali regime, with an assessment mission by the head of its MENA program. Two months later, ICTJ organized a major, regional conference intended to provide more accurate information about TJ and how TJ methods could be fruitfully applied in the Tunisian context.
